SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Three Missouri State pitchers held Illinois State to five singles and the Bears claimed a 6-2 Missouri Valley Conference baseball victory Friday at Hammons Field.
The Bears moved to 25-20 overall and 10-8 in the Valley. ISU slipped to 18-29 and 8-11 in league play.
Scott Carroll, also Missouri State’s quarterback in football, limited the Redbirds to four hits and one run over the first seven innings to hike his record to 5-4. Matt Frevert pitched the eighth, and Chris Krawczyk worked the ninth for his seventh save.
Nolan Keane got the Bears off to a quick start with a two-run home in the first inning off ISU starter Ian Berger (5-5).
Berger allowed six earned runs in six innings.
“I thought that after the exciting series win over Wichita State last weekend that we would come out fired up and take it to Missouri State,” said Redbird coach Jim Brownlee. “But Ian struggled on the mound and we couldn’t get anything done at the plate.”
Kris Jenkins had the lone RBI for ISU. The series continues with a 2 p.m. game today.
