The Illinois State women's 1,600-meter relay team of Andrea Mosher, Kimberli Smudde, Anna Lovell and Lian Lucas turned in a school-record time to win and secure a second-place team finish for the Redbirds Saturday at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The Redbird foursome was clocked in 3 minutes, 34.70 seconds.
The record-setting performance in the final event of the day vaulted ISU past both host Northern Iowa and Missouri State into second place behind conference champions Wichita State.
Devon Williams won the 60 dash with school-record time of 7.43 while Lucas also set a school mark while winning the 200 (24.0). Both sprinters provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoors Championships. Lucas finished second to Williams in the 60 while Williams came in third in the 200.
On the men's side, Northern Iowa again claimed the team championship while Illinois State finished in fourth place.
Bronco Meeks led the Redbirds by winning the 800 with a season-best time of 1:50.69. Mark Jackson took second in both the shot put and the weight throw while T.J. Fakehinde placed second in the high jump with a season-best effort of 6-8.
Softball team rained out
ISU's softball team was rained out in the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday in Columbus, Ga.
The Redbirds (3-6) were scheduled to complete pool play against No. 12 Northwestern. ISU, which leads its pool with a 2-0 record, will look to finish the tournament today with its game against the Wildcats and one game of bracket play.
However, weather conditions and the travel schedules of the tournament participants will dictate the remaining schedule.
