5 years ago (2014): Greenville College recruit Jesse Getz doubled twice, drove in one run and scored twice to lead Tremont to an 8-2 win over El Paso-Gridley in the championship game of the Heart of Illinois Conference Tournament at Horenberger Field.

15 years ago (2004): Normal Community clinched at least a share of the Big 12 Conference softball title with a 5-2 come-from-behind win over Decatur MacArthur. Shanna Diller had four hits for NCHS.

25 years ago (1994): Illinois State scored three runs in the seventh inning and one in the eighth for a stunning 6-5 victory over top-seeded and nationally ranked Wichita State in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Mark Hahn got the victory in relief.

50 years ago (1969): Knowing that Bob Oliver was a railroad buff, Denver University basketball coach Stan Albeck bought the 6-foot-9 Normal Community High School senior a train ticket to Denver, not the plane ticket usually given to prep standouts. “I loved every minute of it,” Oliver said of the train ride, after announcing he would sign a grant-in-aid with Denver.
