5 years ago (2007): D.A. Weibring pronounced himself “very humble and very blessed” to find his name forever linked with the Illinois State University Golf Course.  The course was renamed “Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University” in his honor.

15 years ago (1997): Illinois Wesleyan coach Norm Eash announced Chad Beaty would start at quarterback for the Titans in the season-opening game at Thomas More (Ky.).  Beaty and sophomore Brian Shemansky have been locked in a near dead heat since practice began.

25 years ago (1987): Bloomington Beer Nuts finished third in the Amateur Softball Association Men’s Fastpitch Midwest Regional, falling to Aurora (Ill.) Coors 6-2 in an elimination game.  Coach C. J. Stolfa expressed disappointment saying “it’s hard to win a game when you let them score six runs."

50 years ago (1962): Atlanta’s Harvey Bennett, within one strike of a no-hitter, weakened with two out in the seventh inning, but still hurled the Redwings to a 4-2 victory over Hartsburg-Emden.
