5 years ago (2006): Allison Ward’s headfirst slide into home in eighth inning produced the winning run and Amber May pitched a two-hitter to give Normal Community a 1-0 victory over Normal West and the undisputed Big 12 Conference softball title.
15 years ago (1996): Eureka High School freshman Heidi Knapp won Class A championships in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter events at the 24th girls state track meet. Dwight’s 3,200-meter relay team also was victorious.
25 years ago (1986): Country Companies compiled a 3,256 handicap total to claim first place in the third annual Bloomington Bowling Association Tournament of Champions. The team consisted of Bud Lawyer, Rod White, Jim Jacobs, Keith Erickson and Neil Goodsell.
50 years ago (1961): Chicago White Sox pitcher Russ Kemmerer, a Bloomington resident, gave BHS hurler Bert Popejoy lessons on how to throw a slider and Popejoy used the tips to good advantage with a two-hit, 14-strikeout performance and a 6-1 win over Armington for the Bloomington Regional title.
