5 years ago (2007): Illinois State soccer dropped a 3-0 exhibition match to Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Drew Roff’s debut as the Redbirds’ coach.  “It was our first time in a game situation like that and I saw some things I liked,” Roff said.

15 years ago (1997): Illinois State football coach Todd Berry confirmed that Ryan Spielman will start at quarterback in the Redbirds’ season opener at Southern Utah.  He also said true freshman Kevin Glenn has earned a chance to play in that contest.

25 years ago (1987): Eric Niepagen’s hit in the bottom of the ninth scored Bubba Bell to lift the Bloomington Hearts major fastpitch softball team to a 1-0 victory over Taylorville at O’Neill Park.  The Hearts, 64-17, earned a sweep with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

50 years ago (1962): Jerry Iler of Le Roy bested Don Evans of Ellsworth in a 1-0 mound duel that gave LeRoy the Corn Belt League championship.  Ellsworth won the nightcap, 6-5.
