5 years ago (2014): Normal West High School golf standout Steven Mullins has signed a national letter of intent with Illinois State, ISU coach Ray Kralis announced. Mullins was a three-time state qualifier for the Wildcats and took third place in the Class 3A State Tournament in 2012.
15 years ago (2004): Chris Shepherd and Jeff Darnall drove in first-inning runs and the Twin City Scrappers made them stand up in a 2-0 win over Peoria CL Wyman. Rob Saunders (2-0) worked 6⅔ innings for the victory.
25 years ago (1994): Steve Maxheimer fired a nifty 4-under-par 66 at Highland Park to become medalist of the Bloomington-Normal Match Play Tournament for the second time in three years. Normal’s Jim Butler sizzled with a 5-under 30 on the front nine and finished with a 69.
50 years ago (1969): Myron Kumler pitched a perfect game as the GMC Trucks softball team defeated Kankakee, 9-0, in the opener of a doubleheader at O’Neil Park. The Truckers also captured the second game, 5-1. Butch Woods hit a three-run homer and Bill Kennedy allowed only two hits, fanning 10.
