5 years ago (2014): Stating he was “very happy and humbled by the opportunity,” Steve Paxson became University High School’s fourth head baseball coach since 1959. The 41-year-old served as the Pioneers’ pitching coach last spring following a 14-year run as a head coach at Brimfield, Kewanee and Galva.

15 years ago (2004): Todd Mitchell of Bloomington fell a stroke short in his bid for a third straight Illinois State Amateur golf championship. Mitchell, who entered the final round nine strokes off the lead, fired a course-record-tying 7-under par 64 at Urbana to finish at 1-under-par 283.

25 years ago (1994): Jim Scott hung up his cleats and put away his scorecard for the final time as University High’s baseball and boys golf coach by announcing his retirement, ending a 38-year association with the Pioneers’ athletic program.

50 years ago (1969): Springfield Quality Furniture opened the ASA Class A State Softball Tournament by upsetting highly regarded GMC Trucks, 4-1. GMC starting pitcher Myron Kumler breezed through the first five innings before being touched for two runs in the sixth. The Trucks are considered one of the pre-tournament favorites.
