15 years ago (1996): University High senior right-hander Todd Mitchell silenced Beardstown’s bats with a four-hit, 11-strikeout gem that sparked the Pioneers to a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the Class A State Baseball Tournament.
25 years ago (1986): Normal Community’s baseball team took advantage of an overpowering two-hit pitching performance by John Hayek to register a 4-1 win over Mattoon in the Springfield Class AA Sectional Tournament.
50 years ago (1961): Andy Hauptman of Bloomington, a 1959 University of Illinois graduate, signed a contract to coach football at Galva High School next fall. Hauptman is one of many Trinity graduates who have gone out and made good.
