5 years ago (2014): Sophomore ace Ally Wiegand struck out 17 batters in a one-hit shutout as Tri-Valley High School posted a 5-0 Heart of Illinois Conference softball victory over El Paso-Gridley. Alexis West had three hits and Allison Wombles drove in two runs with a double for the Vikings.

15 years ago (2004): Bloomington resident and former Illinois State runner Dan Engel surged ahead in the final 100 meters to emerge victorious in the 7.5-mile Lake Run on a cool, wet morning at Lake Bloomington. His time was 40 minutes, 47.8 seconds.

25 years ago (1994): Dan Latka’s RBI fielder’s choice grounder capped a two-run, ninth-inning rally as Illinois State edged Southern Illinois, 4-3, in the second game of a baseball doubleheader at Redbird Field. SIU won the opener, 10-3.

50 years ago (1969): One school record was lowered as Illinois Wesleyan’s track team breezed to victory in a quadrangular meet at Wesleyan Stadium. Spoon River of Canton finished second, followed by MacMurray and Eureka. Ted Struck of Morris lowered his record in the three-mile run with a winning time of 15:37.6.
