5 years ago (2014): Central Catholic’s Sydney Shanks had eight kills and four blocks as the Saints defeated University High, 25-21, 25-23, in a hard-fought Corn Belt Conference battle at Bloomington. Maddie Holt and Claire Boe had 14 and 13 assists, respectively, for the Saints, who improved to 13-11 overall and 8-2 in conference.

15 years ago (2004): Harland Kilborn finished the last round of his 25-year career as head coach of the Illinois State men’s golf team in the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic at Orlando, Fla. Kilborn’s Redbirds topped the leaderboard all weekend, only to finish fourth on the final day.

25 years ago (1994): Third baseman Brian Martie, the first Bloomington Hearts player to hit .400 for a season, was named the team’s most valuable player at its season-ending awards banquet. Martie hit .406 for the Hearts, who won the state title and finished tied for 13th in the ASA National Tournament in Palm Springs, Calif.

50 years ago (1969): Illinois State University golf star Frank Niepagen has broken the ISU Golf Course record with a 5-under-par 65. Niepagen, a senior from Bloomington (Normal Community), shaved one stroke off the previous record that he shared with former Redbird golfers Tom Jacobsen and Jerry Diamond.
