5 years ago (2014): Barry Nixon, who coached Bloomington High School to two boys state tennis championships before becoming the men’s head tennis coach at Illinois State, died in Venice, Fla. He was 73.

15 years ago (2004): Stephen Carroll nailed a 35-yard field goal with 12 seconds remaining to lift Illinois State to a come-from-behind 34-31 Gateway Conference football victory over Southwest Missouri State. The Redbirds scored the final 17 points to boost their record to 3-2.

25 years ago (1994): Illinois State quarterback Joel Bosman passed for three touchdowns, including two to fullback Maceo Rainey, and tailback Hickey Thompson battered Southwest Missouri State defense for a career-high 163 yards as the Redbirds won 28-14 before a rain-soaked homecoming crowd of 6,974 people.

50 years ago (1969): Bob Trefzger and Mike Thomas led Bloomington High School’s cross country team to an 18-40 victory over Champaign Centennial High School. Trefzger toured the 2.75-mile course at Bloomington Country Club in 14:27 and Thomas crossed the line in 14:43.
