Galligan sets blocks mark for EIU women

Central Catholic High School graduate Rachel Galligan has broken the single-season block record for Eastern Illinois' women's basketball team.

Galligan blocked four shots in a 69-68 overtime win over Morehead State on Saturday, giving her 50 for the season. The previous record, which had stood for 24 years, was 47.

The 6-foot-2 freshman is averaging 6.3 rebounds and 9.7 points per game for the Panthers (9-11 overall, 8-4 Ohio Valley Conference).

Braffet wins 5,000 at Penn State meet

Normal West High School graduate Meghan Braffet, a junior at the University of Maryland, won the 5,000 meters at the Penn State National Open indoor track and field meet at State College, Pa., Saturday.

Braffet was timed in an Eastern College Athletic Conference qualifying time of 16 minutes, 48.58 seconds.

Chismark leading Olivet Nazarene

Normal West graduate Stan Chismark is averaging team-leading 14.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for the Olivet Nazarene basketball team. He has started 22 games for the Tigers.

Prairie Central grad playing at Blackburn

Prairie Central High School graduate Jake McWhorter of Fairbury is a key reserve for the Blackburn College men's basketball team.

The co-captain went was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, including six 3-pointers, to finish with 20 points in a win over Eureka College in December.

Blackburn is currently tied for first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Cook receives award for Millikin volleyball

Sophomore Rachel Cook of Heyworth won the Offensive Award on the 29-10 Millikin volleyball team after registering 460 kills and shared the MVP award with seniors Jamie Florey and Katie Crumley. Also earning letters from the Pantagraph area were freshman Karen Carlson of Mahomet-Seymour and sophomore Susie Bull of Prairie Central.
