CHICAGO “ The Illinois Wesleyan women's basketball team has clinched a spot in next weekend's College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament.
Entering today's 2 p.m. regular-season finale at North Park, the Titans also have a chance to host the conference tournament with a win and at least one Wheaton loss in its last two CCIW games.
"We still can't come close to figuring it out," IWU coach Mia Smith said of the many possibilities. "There is a chance to host the tournament, and I don't think the chance to too slim. I think it's greater than slimmer. But it does depend on the rest of the conference, too."
Wheaton (19-4 overall) leads the CCIW at 9-3. The Titans are 17-7 and 9-4 in league play, while North Park is 13-11 and 8-5, respectively. Those three teams have secured tournament bids.
The fourth team will be either Elmhurst, Carthage or Millikin.
"Our main focus is to take care of ourself," said Smith. "We have to come out of there with a win."
Two hobbled Titans are expected to play today. Freshman starting point guard Mallory Heydorn has a foot stress fracture, while reserve post player Brianna Baker-Carvell has a sore ankle.
"This team has dealt with adversity the entire season and managed to thrive, not just survive," Smith said. "So we're going to continue to do that."
