Understand what Pride is about — and its history

“Pride is a celebration of our right to exist,” said Storms. June was chosen to commemorate the Stonewall riots of 1969, when police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in New York City. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents that continued for six days with protests and violent clashes.

Educate yourself about lesser known LGBTQ events, as well, such as the 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria riots in San Francisco, which marked the beginning of transgender activism in the city. All it takes is a quick Google to get the basics.
