EUREKA - At the April 2 city council meeting, members have noticed most of the feedback they have received in terms of the creation of a business district has been negative. Mayor Scott Zimmer recapped the discussion at earlier meetings and noted the school facilities tax recently passed. He asked for input from members about the proposed district, which would be funded by up to a one percent increase in sales tax on certain goods sold within the district.
According to a draft of minutes from the meeting, council member Chuck Germann expressed concern about the increase in the sales tax and a lack of an overall plan for improving things for businesses and creating a vision for the city. He added he could not support an increase for those reasons. Members Bob Prather and Eric Lind both noted they have heard several concerns about increased taxes, while council member Tim Getz mentioned he has received negative feedback and he stands behind the businesses who have generally been opposed to the proposal.
