EUREKA - At its meeting this past Tuesday, the city council talked about dredging the lake. Mayor Scott Zimmer noted the depth of the lake and possible dredging has “been a pretty hot topic of discussion around town” since the water has been out of the lake in preparation for the fish kill.
He added in order to get approval for dredging, officials would need to obtain a joint permit from the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Natural Resources and the Army Corps of Engineers. If they went ahead and did the engineering and got the permits, the project could last until next summer--meaning the lake would be without water for planned events such as Hope Fest, which includes a kayak race.
“Although dredging is certainly a management action that will be required sometime in the future,” Zimmer said, “it does not appear to be a critical action at this time.”
