EUREKA - Mayor Scott Zimmer and several city council members heard questions, concerns and ideas regarding plans for a proposed business district from business owners and citizens at a special public meeting on Feb. 20.
If the council goes ahead with a business district, certain items and goods sold within it could see an additional sales tax of up to one percent to generate funds they can use for improvement projects and eligible expenses within the district.
“When you step into something new, there’s a lot of questions and hesitance and I understand that,” Zimmer said. “We’ve been getting a lot of questions on what the funds will be used for and what I want to hear is what do people think we need so we can make plans to have the money go where people think it should go.”
Concerns from many of those in attendance centered around the increased sales tax, especially as other taxes being retained or increased throughout the county have also been proposed.
