EUREKA – Silas S. Hofmann Jr., 84, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, at the Chariton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Chariton, Iowa.
He was born Aug. 17, 1930, near Morton, the son of Silas and Hannah Hofmann Sr. He married Thelma Mae Knecht on Sept. 2, 1951, in Eureka. She survives.
Other survivors include five sons, Steve (Nancy) Hofmann, Lamoni, Iowa, Carl Hofmann, Kellerton, Iowa, Fred (Sheila) Hofmann, Blue Rapids, Kan., and Ron (Micki) Hofmann and John (Cindi) Hofmann, both of Humeston, Iowa; two daughters, Christine Hofmann, Chariton and Kathleen (Dennis) McIntire, Lamoni; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one sister, Lorraine (Herbert) Weier, Ft. Wayne, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Michael Hofmann in infancy and Daniel Hofmann, and one sister-in-law, Janet Knecht.
Si graduated from Deer Creek High School in 1948. He was a truck driver for Ed Pyles and Chipper Cartage for 10 years before he shifted to farming in 1962 near Gridley. Si purchased his first farm in 1964, as his family moved from Gridley to Humeston. His farming operation included dairy, crops and livestock. In 1998, he sold a portion of his farm holdings and moved to Chariton, as he continued to work on the family farm for the next decade. His passing marked a half-century of residence in Iowa. Si took a particular interest in his friends, family genealogy, old-time country music and antique trucks.
Services were held Saturday at Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Burial took place in Chariton Cemetery, Chariton.
