FARMINGTON - Eureka overcame three Deer Creek-Mackinaw set points Wednesday night to claim a 25-20, 28-26 victory in the sectional final.
Hailey Flowers' 12th kill of the evening arrived on match point for Eureka (30-7).
The Hornets overcame early 7-1 and 4-0 deficits in the first and second sets, respectively.
“That’s not how we wanted to start,” Eureka coach Tracy Heffren said. “They’re very calm and they know they can win. They keep striving for that and they do not get rattled very easily. Our kids were able to keep their focus and battled back.”
Carson Smalley finished with 12 kills for the Chiefs, who ended with a record of 29-7-1.
“It’s a tough one,” pointed out DCM coach Brandon Mueller. “They just got some big kills when they needed them. Number three (Courtney Heffren) and No. 8 (Flowers) we knew they were going to them, but we did not do a good job stopping them. They made some big plays when they had to.”
Eureka meets Quincy Notre Dame (31-8) in Friday's Illini Bluffs Supersectional. Match time from Glasford is 7 p.m. The Raiders swept Pleasant Plains 25-21, 25-19 for the New Berlin Sectional championship.
Notes: The Hornets now have six 30-win seasons in program history, while DCM was seeking their fifth.
