GRANVILLE - A regional plaque was hoisted by Eureka for a fourth straight season following a 25-18, 25-21 victory over Peru St. Bede in Thursday's championship match at Putnam County's R.M. Germano Gymnasium.
In the 2017 final on the Bruins' home floor, the Hornets (34-3) waxed them 25-4, 25-16.
“We talked about that,” commented Hornets’ coach Tracy Heffren of their opposition using the revenge factor as motivation. “They’re a good team. I’m pretty sure the loss last year would fire them up. They stepped up.”
Hailey Flowers recorded a match-best 14 kills, while Amy Pineda added 16 assists.
PSB (29-7) received six kills apiece from Macey Bosnich and Hallie McGuire.
Eureka, winners of 10 in a row, advances to the Monmouth United Sectional where they'll face surprising Bureau Valley (17-15-1) Monday at 5:30 p.m. The Storm, who upset United two days before, dropped the opening set, but rallied to oust Knoxville 23-25, 25-20, 25-18 at Aledo (Mercer Co.). The Monday nightcap sees underdog Biggsville West Central (21-12) taking on Deer Creek-Mackinaw (25-10).
Notes: Eureka recorded their third consecutive and seventh 30-win campaign in program history, while the Bruins were denied their first. The Hornets boast a neutral record of 17-2 this season.
