Try 1 month for $5

LETTING IT GO – Jordan Huschen of Roanoke-Benson fires away from short range on Friday night. Despite 14 points from the senior, the Rockets lost 53-50 to DePue (For the Journal/Ben Aldrich).

ROANOKE - It had been over over a month since DePue last won a basketball game.

The Little Giants came to Dick Broers Gymnasium Friday night and stunned Tri-County Conference host Roanoke-Benson 53-50. That stopped a string of 10 consecutive defeats.

R-B (13-6, 4-2) led by as many as nine in the first half and went into the break up 32-27. Rockets' coach Abe Zeller was hopeful one spurt would put the game out of reach.

"I said at halftime, when we were up five, the run is coming. We're going to create separation," he commented. "It never came. We did not have any killer instinct or that extra umph."

With the score tied at 50, Marcus Winfert drove the lane and scored a bucket as he was fouled. He made the free throw to give DePue (7-14, 2-4) a 53-50 lead with 10.3 seconds left. Winfert ended up with 21 points.

Following a timeout, R-B had the ball to try for the answer. Jordan Huschen (14 points) got a good look at a three-pointer from the top of the key with five ticks left. The shot missed and the guests secured the rebound and ran out the remaining second and a half on the clock.

Notes: The loss was the first in six home games for the Rockets. Jake Weber (942) is 58 away from becoming a member of the 1,000-point club. He recorded 10 on Friday.
